Samarium cobalt magnets (SmCo)
Specialty magnets
for extreme operating conditions
Custom samarium cobalt magnets for demanding applications
Our samarium cobalt magnets (SmCo) are the ideal solution for technical applications in which standard magnets reach their limits. Continuous operation at high temperatures above 300 °C, corrosion and other loads pose no problem for them. We develop and manufacture individual magnets using special samarium cobalt alloys that are specifically adapted to the extreme requirements of their field of application. Talk to the specialists at Max Baermann and let us design a permanent magnet together that also withstands extreme operating conditions.

Technical properties
Samarium cobalt magnets are convincing wherever magnetic performance has to be maintained even under extreme conditions. The alloy of samarium (a light rare earth element) and cobalt offers very high coercivity, a low temperature coefficient and excellent resistance to corrosion, chemicals and many fluids.
Compared with NdFeB magnets, SmCo magnets do not reach the same maximum energy density, but they are considerably more robust thermally and chemically. They are therefore used above all in high-temperature applications, corrosive environments and safety-critical assemblies.

Technische Eigenschaften

Variants and fields of application
We manufacture samarium cobalt magnets as a sintered or plastic-bonded specialty solution, tailored to your applications. We create durable magnetic components from samarium cobalt for sensors, rotors and other technical assemblies alike. Discover the key variants and typical applications of our custom SmCo magnets:
Plastic-bonded samarium cobalt magnets
Max Baermann can develop SmCo magnets as a plastic-bonded magnet solution when, in addition to the magnetic properties, the size and shape of the component are also constrained. A custom plastic-bonded SmCo solution can not only meet individual component requirements but also realize complex shapes. This simplifies key production processes – for example because assembly becomes easier or additional components become unnecessary. A plastic-bonded samarium cobalt magnet solution from Max Baermann can therefore lead to optimized cost structures and more efficient end products.

Sintered samarium cobalt magnets
Sintered samarium cobalt magnets are the ideal SmCo version for particularly demanding technical applications. They are used when high magnetic strength, thermal stability and corrosion resistance matter more than maximum design freedom, because the sintering process produces high-performance permanent magnets with very stable magnetic properties. During product development we combine precisely these characteristics of sintered SmCo magnets with the specific requirements of your field of application. The result is a reliable, high-performance magnet solution.

Use as a magnetic component in rotors
SmCo magnets are particularly suitable for rotors that have to operate reliably at high temperatures or in demanding media. This is why Max Baermann develops and manufactures its most reliable magnetic rotor components from samarium cobalt. Our solutions are regularly installed in sectors such as mechanical engineering, general industry and automotive. Work with us to realize a samarium cobalt magnet for rotor applications too. Whether sintered or plastic-bonded, we promise you a reliable solution with precise magnetization, homogeneous field distribution and smooth running in the final system.

Use as a magnetic component in sensors
Max Baermann develops SmCo magnets as application-specific sensor components for environments with high or strongly fluctuating temperatures, for example in the automotive industry. Thanks to the low temperature coefficient, the magnetic field remains stable across a wide temperature range, which can reduce signal deviations and the need for additional temperature compensation. The high coercivity also protects against demagnetization and stray fields. For reliable measurement results, Max Baermann precisely matches magnetization, magnetic field curve, angular error and field homogeneity to the measuring principle and the installation situation.
